In a powerful conversation on CBC’s Metro Morning, Fayosola, curator of the "Hey Sis…" Exhibition, and Simone Patricia, a featured artist shared the true essence of this inspiring showcase.
For Fayosola, ‘’Hey Sis…’’ began as a personal journey, driven by the sense of kinship she feels towards black women, ‘’To me, when I see a black woman the first thing that comes to mind is Hey Sis’’ she explains. This exhibition is her love letter to the community celebrating black women's multifaceted essence and giving black female artists a platform to showcase their works.
Simone Patricia also shares this sentiment, emphasising that "Hey Sis…" is about celebrating the community of sisters regardless of their relationship. "It's about women watering each other and helping each other grow", she says. Simone’s passion for this project stems from its focus on women’s positive experiences. Simone will showcase two stunning pieces: ‘’Bloom’’ and ‘’Selfie Time’’. ‘’Bloom’’ is a painting of four women of colour leaning on themselves and flowers on their heads which depicts these four women supporting each other, symbolising growth and solidarity. ‘’Selfie Time’’ is a personal reflection of Simone’s journey.
Both women shared their introduction to the arts. Fayosola grew up surrounded by Arts thanks to her parents, her uncle's influence, and her museum visits. She expressed her excitement about being able to showcase artists by creating a platform that showcases them in their most authentic form. Simone says "Her ability to paint is her God-given talent", She has been painting all her life even as a kid, and expresses her continuous love for drawing, painting, and visual arts. Her love for art led her to pursue degrees in Visual Arts and Education.
Notably, their recent partnership with STACKT for their second exhibition was a huge success marking a significant milestone for Gallery OKE. Fayosola hints at exciting plans, including multiple exhibitions in 2025 and ‘something big’, including a city-wide installation for 2026.
